Description
The curriculum is a professional development framework designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and the practical realities of managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Its primary goal is to standardize and elevate marine resource management through a tiered, competency-based learning journey. The program focuses on six project countries: Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, and Panama.
The curriculum consists of 27 modules organized into five thematic units. To ensure a logical progression, it follows a prerequisite three tier structure. Tier 1 (Foundational) establishes a common language covering conservation literacy, the Blue Economy, and legal frameworks. Tier 2 (Technical and Theoretical) branches into specialized operational roles such as ecological and social monitoring, operations and compliance, and spatial and management planning. Tier 3 (Strategy and Evaluation) focuses on high-level synthesis, including sustainable financing, governance, and management effectiveness.
The training is architected to support three distinct career paths within the marine conservation sector: 1) The Field Practitioner, focused on ‘boots on the ground’ or ‘fins in the water’ skills like drone piloting, enforcement patrols, and site maintenance, 2) The Conservation Scientist, focused on rigorous data collection, biophysical and socioeconomic monitoring, and fisheries science and 3) The Manager and Policy Lead, focused on system-wide oversight, sustainable business models, and high-level strategy.
It is recommended that the delivery of the curriculum should employ a blended learning model to balance accessibility with practical mastery.
